As part of Abu Dhabi Cricket’s ongoing transformation into a world-class multi-sport community hub, eight new 5-a-side football pitches have been constructed within the facility’s grounds. All of the Astroturf football courts will be floodlit and will be available for individual bookings from Sunday 18th March.
The football pitches are just the latest in a series of improved facility offerings from Abu Dhabi Cricket, including two new FIFA-approved floodlit grass football pitches, a 40% expansion of the Zayed Cricket Academy and LED floodlighting on the facility cricket ovals, increasing community cricket capacity by 30%. These exciting new developments will be open to friends and families, bringing together Abu Dhabi’s wider public and allowing them to get fit in a fun and exciting environment at an affordable price-point.
In a bid to get as many people involved in sport and practicing as healthy a lifestyle as possible, Abu Dhabi Cricket will also look to stage several five-a-side tournaments of its own for women, men, boys and girls. Speaking ahead of the launch, His Excellency Aref Al Awani, General Secretary, Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said: “We are thrilled to build new world-class facilities in Abu Dhabi with a view to increasing sports participation here in the emirate. Projects such as these are key to ensuring that the entire Abu Dhabi community is able to participate in year-round sports offerings.”
The football pitches will be the first of their kind in Abu Dhabi and will be a ground-breaking addition to the spectacular sports facilities already available in the capital. Not only will the courts be available to people of all ages but will be open daily from 9am-11pm, fitting even the busiest of schedules! Bookings will be able to be made in hourly slots, starting on either the hour or half-past the hour with an hour-long slot costing AED 300 – the equivalent of AED 30 / player for two teams of five or AED 21 / players for two squads of seven.
Abu Dhabi Cricket wants to see as many people as possible get involved with sport, particularly women. Commenting on this strategy to draw in new members, Houriya Al Taheri, Head Coach of the UAE Women’s team, said: “It is fantastic to have access to these new facilities in Abu Dhabi – the 5-a-side courts will nicely compliment the training sessions we intend to hold on the FIFA standard pitches. It’s a really exciting time, even more so now that our ladies will not only have access to these world-class facilities but that they’ll be able to train whenever they wish. So we’re grateful for the support that both Abu Dhabi Cricket and Abu Dhabi Sports Council have shown to women’s football.”
Initiatives such as these will remain a priority for Abu Dhabi Cricket and will continue to form part of our long-term strategy as we target audiences from outside of our core cricketing fan base. Being a multi-sport facility will enable us to become one of the premier community hubs in Abu Dhabi. My thanks to Abu Dhabi Sports Council and His Excellency Aref Al Awani – their pioneering support towards community sport in Abu Dhabi is unmatched. It is thanks to their efforts that we are able to offer more sport here at Abu Dhabi Cricket, ensuring we have a direct benefit on the community and individuals by promoting sport as a lifestyle
